Dr. José Fernando Maya-Vetencourt obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of the Andes in Merida. He then pursued a Master’s degree in Biochemistry and Cellular Biology at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris, where he contributed to an international research project. He earned his PhD in Neurobiology at the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa under the mentorship of Lamberto Maffei and continued there as a Postdoctoral fellow. His postdoctoral work extended to the NEST laboratory.

In 2017, Dr. Maya-Vetencourt received two prestigious “Young Investigator” awards: one from the Italian Physiological Society in Pavia and another from the Federation of European Physiological Societies in Vienna.

Pioneering Research

Dr. Maya-Vetencourt pioneered approaches to reactivate juvenile-like plasticity in the adult visual system (Nat Neurosc 2007; Science 2008). He explored chromatin susceptibility mechanisms for reinstating plasticity in the adult brain (Eur J Neurosci 2011). At IIT, he set up an electrophysiology lab to apply photovoltaic interfaces in rodent models of retinitis pigmentosa, leading to the development of a fully organic prosthetic device for subretinal implantation in RCS rats (Nat Mat 2017). This research demonstrated significant recovery of light sensitivity and visual acuity, accompanied by increased metabolic activity in the visual cortex.

Current Projects

Dr. Maya-Vetencourt is currently working on adapting surgical implant procedures for pig models to evaluate biocompatibility and visual function recovery (Front Bioeng Biotech 2020). He is also developing innovative “liquid” retinal prostheses to address age-related macular degeneration (Nat Nanotech 2020a, 2020b).

Future Directions

Dr. Maya-Vetencourt continues to advance the field of neuroscience by developing novel, biocompatible, and cost-effective solutions for neurodegenerative diseases, aiming to improve therapeutic outcomes for patients with degenerative blindness.

She completed her undergraduate studies with a Bachelor of Biochemistry (Licenciatura en Bioquímica) from the Faculty of Biology at the Universidad de La Habana in 1993. Later, she pursued postgraduate studies and earned a Master in Science and Technology of Biotechnological Processes (Maestría en Ciencias y Tecnología de Procesos Biotecnológicos) from the Institute of Pharmacy and Food at the Universidad de La Habana in 2015.

Course

She has pursued numerous courses to enhance her expertise. In 1994, she took a course on Biological Safety in Laboratories at Instituto Finlay, followed by a Basic Immunology Course in 1995, and Biometry and Experimental Design at the Faculty of Biology, UH, the same year. She studied Biochemistry of Fermentations in 1996 and attended courses on Protein Structures and Enzyme Immobilization. Between 1996 and 1998, she completed English Level I at Instituto Finlay, continuing to Levels II, III, and IV. In 1999, she attended an Industrial Chromatography Course by A. Pharmacia Biotech in Germany. She also studied Theory and Management Techniques at Instituto Finlay. In 2000, she took an Advanced English Course and a Basic Course on Microcomputer Operation at CENSAI, and studied Protein Purification and Isolation at the Faculty of Biology, UH, along with Ultra-cleanliness and Maintenance of Cleanroom Conditions at Instituto Finlay. She also learned about the Operation Cost System of Plant III, General Aspects of Tangential Filtration, and Biosafety at Instituto Finlay in 2001.

In 2002, she took a course on Good Manufacturing Practices for Biological Products at Instituto Finlay. She studied Philosophy at ISP “E. José Varona” in 2003 and English at CNIC the same year. She learned about the Milli-UF-50 Ultrafiltration System for Purified Water at Instituto Finlay in October 2003 and Technological Modifications for IFA Vaccine Production in 2004. She completed courses on Good Practices for Supervisors, Water in the Pharmaceutical Industry, and Specialist Categorization in Advanced Technology in 2005. In 2006, she took courses on Integral Security and Biosafety, Good Practices for Biological Products, and Good Practices in Documentation at Instituto Finlay. She studied Risk Management at Terra Farma in 2008 and Treatment of Non-Conformities with CAPA Focus at Instituto Finlay in 2008 and 2009.

In 2009, she also took courses on Training in Garment Change in Controlled Environments, Basic Validation Principles for Active Substance Area, Fermentation and Sanitization Operations, and Cleaning and Sanitization of Areas at Instituto Finlay. In 2010, she studied Integrated Management of Biosafety and Quality in Biopharmaceutical Products at Instituto Finlay. Professional Experience at Instituto Finlay

She has held various key positions throughout her career. From 1994 to 1996, she served as the Shift Head of the Purification Area, overseeing the purification of outer membrane vesicles (VME) of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B. In 1996, she worked as an analyst in the Process Control Department, where she determined the content of proteins, polysaccharides, and lipopolysaccharides, analyzed molecular size by chromatography, and assessed protein expression through SDS-PAGE. From 1996 to 1997, she was the Lead Specialist for the extraction stage of VME. Between 1997 and 1999, she specialized in the purification of capsular polysaccharides, particularly the purification of N. meningitidis polysaccharide C and Salmonella typhi polysaccharide Vi.

In 2000 and 2001, she worked as a Process Analyst. From 2002 to 2004, she was the Head of the Support Group Area, responsible for the preparation of solutions and culture media, including material preparation and sterilization. She became the Head of the Purification Area from 2006 to 2007, where she led the purification of VME of N. meningitidis serogroup B, as well as the purification of N. meningitidis polysaccharides C and A, and Salmonella typhi polysaccharide Vi. She later directed the Department of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients Production, focusing on the production of Neisseria meningitidis and Salmonella cultures

He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Finance at the Capital University of Economics and Business in Beijing, China, since September 2021. Prior to this, he completed his Master’s in Finance from Beijing Union University, Beijing, China, graduating in June 2021. His academic journey began with a Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology, which he obtained from Guilin Medical University, Guilin, Guangxi, China, in June 2010.

Research Experience

He participated in the Project of the National Social Science Foundation of China, focusing on the “Research on Level Measurement, Spatial and Temporal Divergence, and Improvement Path of Rural Financial Services for Rural Revitalization” (19BJY158), where he was mainly responsible for the research design of some sub-topics and participated in enterprise research. Additionally, he contributed to the Key Topic of the China Mobile Communication Federation on the “Research on the Application of Blockchain Technology in Finance” (CMCA2018ZD01), taking charge of the research design of certain sub-topics and writing research reports. Furthermore, he was involved in the research project on “Financial Support for Deepening Financial Services for Private and Micro and Small Enterprises” as part of the Comprehensive Reform Pilot City Project in Jincheng City, Shanxi Province, where he was responsible for independently participating in application writing.

He has co-authored several significant publications, including “Financial Density of Village Banks and Income Growth of Rural Residents” with Yang, G.Z., Xu, G., Zhang, Y., and others, published in Economic Issues in 2021. Additionally, he contributed to “Knowledge Mapping Analysis of Seven Decades of Rural Finance Research in China” with Zhang, F., Xu, G., Zhang, X.Y., and Cheng, X., which appeared in Rural Finance Research in 2020. He also co-authored “A Review of Blockchain Applications in the Financial Sector” with Zhang, F. and Cheng, X., published in Technology for Development in 2019.
