 Prof Dr. Carmen Maiz Arevalo distinguished academic and researcher in the field Pragmatics. Several noteworthy academic projects and theses were conducted at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Marta Álvarez Collado’s Master’s Thesis on “Politeness and facework strategies in the ‘rights of reply’ within the United Nations” received an outstanding grade following her defense on 28/09/2021. Nadiya Grytsak’s comparative study of the development of intercultural competence among postgraduate learners from Spanish and Ukrainian universities was approved. Paloma MartĂ­n RodrĂ­guez also achieved an outstanding grade for her Master’s Thesis, which employed a neo-Gricean approach to analyze humor creation in Intercultural Communication within the TV show The Good Place. Clara Cantos Delgado’s research on “Gender, culture and digital communication” earned her honors during her defense on 28/09/2020. Lastly, MarĂ­a MartĂ­nez JimĂ©nez conducted a notable analysis of presidential speech acts and the representation of force in her Master’s Thesis.

Scientific and technological experience

She has experience in scientific and technological endeavours. At the University of JaĂ©n, she was part of a team of six researchers working on “Towards a more accessible CEFR/VEC,” focusing on adjusting descriptors with corpus-based learner outcomes. This project, spanning four years from 01/09/2021 to 31/12/2025, received a total funding of €47,795 and operated under a full-time dedication regime. At Pablo de Olavide University in Seville, Spain, she collaborated with seven other researchers under the guidance of Principal Investigators LucĂ­a FernĂĄndez Amaya and MarĂ­a de la O LĂłpez HernĂĄndez, exploring “The Digitalization of Human Interaction and its Social Impact.” This project, funded by FEDER Funds with €25,000, ran from 01/12/2021 to 30/06/2023. She also contributed as a researcher to “Humour in the European public sphere,” led by Giselinde Kuipers at KU Leuven in Belgium, which received €13,000 in funding from UNA Europa. This project, operating part-time, spanned from 01/07/2020 to 31/12/2021. Additionally, she was involved in “Stance and Subjectivity in Discourse” at Complutense University of Madrid, funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation (MINECO) and led by Juana Isabel MarĂ­n Arrese and Laura Hidalgo Downing. Lastly, she participated in the “EQUiiP” project at Groningen University in the Netherlands, focusing on educational quality for inclusive international programmes, funded by Erasmus + with a total of €100,000, from 01/10/2016 to 31/10/2019.
