He pursued his academic journey with fervor and dedication, culminating in a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Macau, Macao, China, attained between September 2020 and August 2023. Prior to this, he earned a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Hunan University, China, spanning from September 2016 to June 2019. His educational foundation was laid with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Hainan University, China, completed between September 2012 and June 2016. Work Experience

He commenced his professional journey as a Research Assistant at the State Key Laboratory of IoT for Smart City at the University of Macau, Macau, China, where he actively contributed from August 2019 to August 2020. Building upon his doctoral expertise, he transitioned into a Post-doctoral Fellow role within the Faculty of Science and Technology at the same institution, extending his tenure from November 2023 to July 2024. Zhenkun Yang – Power system protection Award – Best Researcher Award

Mr. Zhenkun Yang  distinguished academic and researcher in the field Power system Protection. In December 2023, he made significant contributions to the field with two journal papers. The first paper, titled “A Negative Sequence Current Injection (NSCI)-based Active Protection Scheme for Islanded Microgrids,” was accepted for publication in the International Journal of Electrical Power & Energy Systems. Additionally, he worked on another paper titled “Novel Control Strategies of Converter-based Generation for Post-fault Recovery in Islanded Microgrids,” which was in preparation for submission to the same journal.

Earlier, in March 2020, he presented his research findings in a conference paper titled “The behavior of virtual synchronous machine (VSM) based converters in front of non-saturable fault.” This paper was published, showcasing his expertise in the field and his ability to contribute to academic discourse through conference presentations and publications.

He pursued his education with a focus on electronic and electrical engineering, starting with his Bachelor’s degree from Northeast Electrical Power University, where he completed a two-year program from September 2014 to June 2016. Building on this foundation, he continued his studies at the University of Strathclyde, where he earned another Bachelor’s degree in electronic and electrical engineering from September 2016 to June 2018. His academic journey culminated in a Ph.D. from the University of Strathclyde, spanning from September 2018 to June 2024. Throughout his doctoral program, he delved deep into the realm of power system protection and control, specifically exploring novel protection schemes and post-fault recovery strategies, thereby contributing to advancements in the field.

Experience

During his time as a student, he engaged in several noteworthy projects and gained valuable practical experience. From September 2017 to March 2018, he undertook a project on Virtual Synchronous Machine (VSM), utilizing MATLAB/Simulink-based platforms to implement converter control strategies simulating real synchronous machine behavior. Additionally, from January 2017 to April 2017, he worked on an Ultrasonic Volume Measurement project, employing PCB-based techniques to measure volume through ultrasonic transmission and reception. Transitioning from student to educator, he served as a Teaching Assistant (TA) at the University of Strathclyde from October 2018 to January 2019, and then again from September 2020 to April 2021. In this role, he underwent TA training, assisted undergraduate students with their queries, facilitated laboratory experiments, participated in invigilation, and contributed to grading processes, thereby enriching his understanding of academic instruction and student support.

Throughout his academic journey, he consistently demonstrated outstanding performance and earned recognition for his achievements. At the University of Strathclyde, he received the prestigious ‘First Honor Degree’ in June 2018, attaining an impressive score of 77.3. Prior to this, he was awarded a ‘Distinction’ in June 2017 with a score of 71.5, further highlighting his academic excellence.
