Mahdyeh Shiri – COVID-19 vaccine supply chain network – Best Researcher Award

Her primary aim is to achieve excellence in the field of AI-based optimization and operations research by leveraging her strong computational and mathematical skills. In particular, she has focused on supply chains and vehicle routing in uncertain environments. She also has a passion for teaching, where she brings her extensive technical knowledge, interpersonal, and communication skills to educate students at all levels. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Industrial Engineering from the University of Kurdistan, Kurdistan, Iran, where she completed her studies from 2015 to 2021. Her dissertation, titled “Home Health Care Routing and Scheduling Under Scenario-Based Uncertainty,” was supervised by Dr. Fardin Ahmadizar, and she graduated with a GPA of 19.33/20. Prior to that, she earned a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Financial Engineering from Shahed University, Tehran, Iran, between 2013 and 2015. Her thesis, “Multi-parts Hub Location with Capacity Under Uncertainty of Capacities,” was supervised by Prof. Mahdi Bashiri, and she achieved a GPA of 18.54/20. She began her academic journey with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Industrial Engineering from Bu-Ali Sina University, Hamadan, Iran, graduating in 2013 with a GPA of 16.71/20.

Professional Highlights

She has taught units in industrial engineering with a focus on operations research and stochastic processes. Her work encompasses several projects, including commodity transport, supply chain mining, routing and scheduling, modeling, health, and artificial intelligence. She has collaborated with researchers from institutions in Australia, Canada, and the UK, developing leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills through industry projects and university teaching. She has supervised Ph.D. and Master’s students and is proficient in mathematical programming, constraint programming, and devising metaheuristics and matheuristics. Her technical skills include proficiency in GAMS, CPLEX, LINGO, MATLAB, and MINITAB. Additionally, she has reviewed multiple papers for esteemed journals such as Transportation Research Part E, Expert Systems with Applications, Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence, and Scientific Reports. She also has experience in project management and managing health, safety, and environmental aspects of ICT projects, including training and mentoring personnel.

Experience

She has gained diverse experience in both academic and industrial settings. Since September 2023, she has been a Lecturer in Industrial Engineering at Alzahra University in Tehran, Iran, teaching courses such as “Transportation Systems,” “Finance Management,” “Accounting System,” and “Ergonomics” for B.Sc. students. Concurrently, since May 2023, she has been a Postdoctoral Researcher at the same university, working on a project titled “Designing Vaccine Supply Chain Network in Covid-19 Epidemic under Uncertainty.” Between December 2022 and October 2023, she served as a Researcher in Data Science, focusing on “Reviewing and Developing Mission-Oriented Approaches of Universities and Research Institutes in Iran” for Iran’s National Elites Foundation. From September 2019 to September 2021, she was involved in project and quality management and personnel training at Saze Peyman Executive Company in Iranshahr, Sistan and Baluchestan, Iran. She also completed a sabbatical from January to August 2019 at the University of Waterloo in Canada, optimizing home healthcare under the supervision of Dr. Houra Mahmoudzadeh. Earlier, from August 2017 to February 2018, she worked as an EHS Manager at Nirooye Gharb Company, a contractor for Huawei in Tehran, Iran.

She has contributed to various academic conferences and publications. In 2023, she co-authored a paper with P. Fattahi and F. Sogand titled “A mathematical model for Covid-19 vaccine supply chain considering the priority of people and government policies,” presented at The 9th International Conference on Industrial and Systems Engineering (ICISE2023). In 2019, she collaborated with F. Ahmadizar, H. Mahmoudzadeh, and M. Bashiri on a study, “A two-phase method for robust home healthcare problem: a case study,” which was published in the proceedings of the International Conference on Human-Centred Software Engineering by Springer. She also presented “Developing a robust optimization approach for stochastic cross-dock truck scheduling problem” at The 10th International Conference of the Iranian Operations Research Society in 2016. In 2015, she co-authored “Multi-part collection centers in a closed-loop supply chain network design under uncertainty” with M. Bashiri, which was featured at The 8th International Conference of the Iranian Operations Research Society. Additionally, in 2014, she contributed to a paper with M. Bashiri and H. Khorasani, “Multi objectives supply chain network design considering customer satisfaction,” presented at the Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management (IEEM) conference.
